Quick Reviews: “Joker”, “Aladdin” and “On The Basis of Sex”

JOKER (2019)

Directed by: Todd Phillips/EUA

Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz…

joker movie

The most polemic film of the year, “Joker” is one of the best pictures of 2019! With an amazing and memorable performance by Joaquin Phoenix – who steps side by side with Heath Ledger as one of the best Jokers so far -, the movie is directed by Todd Philips (“The Hangover”) and deals with the story of this man who struggles with life and people and becomes the most famous villain of pop culture.

The movie is very realistic. It´s not like most of comic book adaptations with many visual effects, people flying or explotions. It´s a psycological drama who finds a lot to say about society, media and how we are part of the problem.

All the discussion about the movie is great and opens the door for us to talk more and evaluate ourselves as human beings and society.

ALADDIN (2019)

Directed by: Guy Ritchie/EUA

Stars: Will Smith, Mana Massoud, Naomi Scott…

Aladdin 2019

I think this is my favorite live action adaptation from Disney remakes so far! Since this adaptations began to happen when “Alice in Wonderland” earned more than 1 billion dollars at the Box Office back in 2010, this “Aladdin” is so much fun to watch, the cast is great – especially Will Smith as the genie -, and the movie shows a lot of respect to the classic animated feature but still has his own style and rhythm. I loved it! I can´t get tired watching it!

ON THE BASIS OF SEX (2018)

Directed by: Mimi Leder/EUA

Stars: Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, Kathy Bates…

We had last year a fantastic documentary called “RBG”, about the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg – the second woman to become judge of the Supreme Court of United States. And in the same year we had this fiction film about her life.

Both are great, and here, the director Mimi Leder creates a movie very engaging and exciting with great performances. It´s easy to care for Ruth and her journey to change the law that discriminates – especially – women. Great film!
