PAIN AND GLORY (2019)
Directed by: Pedro Almodóvar/ESPANHA
Stars: Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz, Asier Etxeandia…

Pedro Almodóvar said this is the most personal movie his done. And you can feel it in every frame of it. Not just personal but also a study about dreams, hurts from the past that still alive and making us miserable. Every second of this “Pain and Glory” we are taken in this journey so profound, and sad, but so true and similar to life that is impossible not to identify to something. It´s one of the best movies from Pedro Almodóvar! And Antonio Banderas is terrific – give him his Oscar nomination, please!
YESTERDAY (2019)
Directed by: Danny Boyle/REINO UNIDO, EUA
Stars: Himesh Patel, Lily James, Ed Sheeran…

What if in the world we didn´t have any songs from The Beatles? That is the fantasy imagined by Richard Curtis (who wrote the script) and the director Danny Boyle here, in this fun and formidable movie called “Yesterday”.
Not just a homage to one of the most important bands in the world, but also a shy study about the music industry today, and how The Beatles would have lost a lot of there authenticity because of how things are done these days. In my opinion, The Beatles would never be the same important band today than when they were realesed – and thanks for that because the new generation… Anyway, the movie is great and totally deserves to be watched.
LATE NIGHT (2019)
Directed by: Nisha Ganatra/EUA
Stars: Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, John LIthgow…

Is always a pleasure to watch Emma Thompson on screen. Especially in this surprisingly good movie called “Late Night”. Here, Emma plays Katherine Newbury, a long renowned talk show host who is facing a downfall in her career, and also in her personal life. Problems with ratings, her attitude with people, everything is crumbling until a new writer comes to the team of the show: Molly Patel! Played by the charismatic Mindy Kaling (also responsable for the script of the movie), Molly is the only woman in the team and your authentic way, and ideas will help shape the show and the person of Katherine. A feel good movie that delivers great performances and a fun message about friendship, respect and diversity.
IRRACIONAL MAN (2015)
Directed by: Woody Allen/EUA
Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Joe Stapleton…

I´m not a huge Woody Allen fan. I usually think his movies are very superb and with a lot of claims and miserable ideas about life. And, I don´t think his funny – at least, it´s not my type of comedy anyway. But, when Allen is inspired and in a good mood he can deliver great stuff like “The Purple Rose of Cairo” (1985) – his best movie to date.
I didn´t watch “Irracional Man” in theathers, and I didn´t have any wish to watch it later, so… I did not. Until this month because I was reviewing all Joaquin Phoenix movies, so… I decided to give it a chance. And… Surprisingly… I liked it very much. Allen is self controled of his ego, the chemistry between Phoenix and Emma Stone is great and the crime plot helps the movie getting more interesting and fun.
THE FANATIC (2019)
Directed by: Fred Durst/EUA
Stars: John Travolta, Devon Sawa, Ana Golja…

The Fanatic has a great idea about fanatic fans and how they deal with their idols. A great premise with a strange John Travolta that delivers a fun and out of reality kind of character, but, unfortunately, in the wrong movie. Does not fit! The script written by David Bakerman and the director Fred Burst doesn´t know how to find the style of the movie. Sometimes it looks like a profund drama about a problematic person that only wants to be loved, and other time the movie goes full crazy mode like a Tarantino vibe. But all done so poorly, so superficial and not interesting enough to make us care about the characters.
ANNA (2019)
Directed by: Luc Besson/EUA, FRANÇA
Stars: Sasha Luss, Cillian Murphy, Helen Mirren, Luke Evans…

The french director Luc Besson has a crush for female fetale – and that is amazing. He made several great movies with memorable female protagonists such as “Nikita”, “The Fifith Element”, “The Profissional” with a young Natalie Portman learning how to be a killer, and even the bad movies like “Lucy” and “Valerian” – for example – we have powerful female lead.
Here in “Anna” we have a story about mega model spies working for KGB and then the CIA get into the mixed, but that is just not memorable enough. Movies like this the plot usually is shallow and forgetable, but Besson knows how to create great action scenes – and is always a pleasure to see beautiful women punching and killing bad guys.
